In My Own Dream is a 1968 album by The Butterfield Blues Band. It continued the trend of its predecessor The Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw in moving towards a more soul-oriented sound, supported by a first rate horn section, (featuring a young David Sanborn), but was not so well-received either by critics or the public as its predecessor. The title cut features a long solo by Sanborn. The drums were handled by Philip Wilson, who went on to jazz renown in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This album is also notable as the last Butterfield record with original members Mark Naftalin and Elvin Bishop who both moved on to solo ventures of varying success.

Sometimes, one has to wonder whether the youth of the 1960s were really as open to new ideas and new sounds as their press would make you believe. Take the album at hand, In My Own Dream by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — their fourth official release (though two others have since gone into their discography at earlier points), it marked the point where the band really began to lose its audience, and all for reasons having nothing to do with the quality of their music. They’d gotten past the loss of Michael Bloomfield in early 1967, over which they’d surrendered some of their audience of guitar idolaters, with the engagingly titled (and guitar-focused) Resurrection of Pigboy Crabshaw. In My Own Dream had its great guitar moments, especially on “Just to Be With You,” but throughout the album, Elvin Bishop’s electric guitar shared the spotlight with the horn section of Gene Dinwiddle, David Sanborn, and Keith Johnson, who had signed on with the prior album and who were more out in front than ever. More to the point, this album represented a new version of the band being born, with shared lead vocals, with the leader himself only taking three of the seven songs, and bassist Bugsy Maugh singing lead on two songs, Bishop on one, and drummer Phillip Wilson taking one song. What’s more, there was a widely shared spotlight for the players, and more of a jazz influence on this record than had ever been heard before from the group. This was a band that could jam quietly for five minutes on “Drunk Again,” building ever-so-slowly to a bluesy crescendo where Bishop’s guitar and Mark Naftalin’s organ surged; and follow it with the title track, a totally surprising acoustic guitar-driven piece featuring Sanborn, Dinwiddle, and Johnson. The playing was impressive, especially for a record aimed at a collegiate audience, but the record had the bad fortune to appear at a point when jazz was culturally suspect among the young, an elitist and not easily accessible brand of music that seemed almost as remote as classical music (i.e. “old people’s” music). “Get Yourself Together” was almost too good a piece of Chicago-style blues, a faux Chess Records-style track that might even have been too “black” for the remnants of Butterfield’s old audience.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is the debut album by Paul Butterfield, released in 1965 on Elektra Records. It peaked at #123 on the Billboard pop albums chart. In 2003, the album was ranked number 476 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, moving up to number 468 in the revised 2012 list, and also is ranked at #11 on Down Beat magazine’s list of the top 50 blues albums.

Even after his death, Paul Butterfield’s music didn’t receive the accolades that were so deserved. Outputting styles adopted from Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters among other blues greats, Butterfield became one of the first white singers to rekindle blues music through the course of the mid-’60s. His debut album, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, saw him teaming up with guitarists Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield, with Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Mark Naftalin playing organ. The result was a wonderfully messy and boisterous display of American-styled blues, with intensity and pure passion derived from every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield’s harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that is no longer existent, even in today’s blues music. Each song captures the essence of Chicago blues in a different way, from the back-alley feel of “Born in Chicago” to the melting ease of Willie Dixon’s “Mellow Down Easy” to the authentic devotion that emanates from Bishop and Butterfield’s “Our Love Is Drifting.” “Shake Your Money Maker,” “Blues With a Feeling,” and “I Got My Mojo Working” (with Lay on vocals) are all equally moving pieces performed with a raw adoration for blues music. Best of all, the music that pours from this album is unfiltered…blared, clamored, and let loose, like blues music is supposed to be released. A year later, 1966’s East West carried on with the same type of brash blues sound partnered with a jazzier feel, giving greater to attention to Bishop’s and Bloomfield’s instrumental talents.

It would be natural to assume the spawning ground for American blues music, Memphis Tennessee, would serve as the fuse that lit the explosion of what many regard as the artistic zenith of the Blues as a pure original art form. It was during the decade from 1945-55 when a seemingly
endless line of shouters and honkers etched their culture into the American landscape.

This groundswell of talent was already in place thanks to local Memphis area radio stations such as WDIA and WKEM by the time Sam Phillips opened his Memphis Recording and Sound Service in 1950 at 706 Union Avenue.

In addition to providing a mobile recording service for parties, weddings, and the like, Phillips became acutely aware of the burgeoning Black music scene. In June 1950 Phillips started leasing recordings he had made of artist such as B.B. King, Joe Hill Louis, and Ike Turner to independent labels such RPM/Modern in Los Angeles and Chess Records in Chicago. It was in this manner that Chester Burnett, aka The Howlin’ Wolf came to the attention of Phillips through Ike Turner, then serving as a talent scout for Phillips.

Howlin’ Wolf was born in West Point, Mississippi in 1910 and learned to play guitar and harmonica by listening to Charlie Patton and Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson II) respectively.

He migrated to Arkansas from the Delta in 1948, had a radio program on WKEM, and made his debut at 706 Union Avenue a memorable one in mid-1951, recording ‘How Many More Years’,
which was leased by Phillips to Chess and became a hit that same November.

A steady stream of Chess releases followed resulting in The Wolf’s eventual migration to Chicago in 1954, much to chagrin of Phillips, who would often state that the loss of Wolf was his biggest regret.

A listen to this album certainly justifies his feelings.
The Wolf recorded prolifically for Phillips between 1951-1953, as for every side leased to Chess, several more titles were left in the can after each session. The tracks presented here reflect some of that work, and all showcase Howlin’ Wolf’s menacing delivery in his unique approach to
the Blues. His gruff vocals and harp are perfectly complemented by the distorted, overdriven guitar of Willie Johnson and the force of Willie Steele’s drums. This core of instrumentalists was often augmented by various piano pounders such as L.C. Hubert, Ike Turner, and Albert Williams, with the occasional horn section at the ready. The tracks included here were recorded over a ten -month period, from December, 1951 to October, 1952. None are less than brilliant. From the Jump Blues of ‘All In The Mood’ and ‘That’s All Right’ to the emphatic, soulful delivery, on such tracks as ‘Bluebird’, ‘California Blues’, and ‘Decoration Day’, these titles showcase the Wolf as the transitional link between the country blues style and its evolution to the urban blues which would become more fully developed in Chicago later in that same decade.

With his departure from Memphis to the more lucrative Chicago Area, Wolf followed in the footsteps of many other Memphis-area bluesmen. As a result of this migration, from 1954 onwards Phillips shifted his focus to White Rockabilly and Country performers, many of whom used Howlin’ Wolf’s vocal delivery as a blueprint for their own unbridled Sun recordings.

The similarities between Billy Lee Riley’s ‘Red Hot’, Warren Smith’s ‘Miss Froggie’, and Smokey Joe Baugh’s ‘The Signifying Monkey’ to the music The Wolf put down at 706 Union Avenue cannot be denied.

Howlin’ Wolf later attained iconic status, due in no small part to his European tours of the 60’s and subsequent adulation of a new generation of Blues enthusiasts. He passed away on January 6th, 1976, having been ill for several years. Like the man himself, his music remains larger than life, the very definition of soul and expressiveness. There are none better.

(Howlin’ Wolf Is a member of both The Rock And Roll Fame, and the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame.)

We offer these recordings to you in stunning 96/24 in the original historic mono.

The potential for a collaboration between B.B. King and Eric Clapton is enormous, of course, and the real questions concern how it is organized and executed. This first recorded pairing between the 74-year-old King and the 55-year-old Clapton was put together in the most obvious way: Clapton arranged the session using many of his regular musicians, picked the songs, and co-produced with his partner Simon Climie. That ought to mean that King would be a virtual guest star rather than earning a co-billing, but because of Clapton’s respect for his elder, it nearly works the other way around. The set list includes lots of King specialties — “Ten Long Years,” “Three O’Clock Blues,” “Days of Old,” “When My Heart Beats Like a Hammer” — as well as standards like “Hold on I’m Coming” and “Come Rain or Come Shine,” with some specially written and appropriate recent material thrown in, so King has reason to be comfortable without being complacent. The real danger is that Clapton will defer too much; though he can be inspired by a competing guitarist such as Duane Allman, he has sometimes tended to lean too heavily on accompanists such as Albert Lee and Mark Knopfler when working with them in concert. That danger is partially realized; as its title indicates, Riding With the King is more about King than it is about Clapton. But the two players turn out to have sufficiently complementary, if distinct, styles so that Clapton’s supportive role fills out and surrounds King’s stinging single-string playing. (It’s also worth noting that there are usually another two or three guitarists on each track.) The result is an effective, if never really stunning, work.

Texas-born singer songwriter Sara K. is well known to audiophiles for her superb albums released by Chesky Records. Her latest, Made In The Shade comes from a German audiophile label Stockfisch Records. Like good wine, this one has it all–that inner glow, that shining light that is the true sign of real art. Guitars, fretless bass and exotic instruments including the concert harp and various percussions form an ideal backdrop for the singer, with Sara K. sounding articulate to the highest degree.

Sara K’s songs reflect folk-blues, rock and jazz sensibilities, and together with her intelligent lyrics they are in a class by themselves. As is the case with her prior recordings, Made In The Shade is beautifully recorded with stunning, vivid details that move the listener. If you care about good sound and have a good stereo system, you will be able to savor all the details, textures and nuances of the wonderful performance.

John Hiatt is an American rock guitarist, pianist, singer, and songwriter. He has played a variety of musical styles on his albums, including New Wave, blues and country. Hiatt has been nominated for several Grammy Awards and has been awarded a variety of other distinctions in the music industry. He remains one of the most respected and influential American singer-songwriters.

In 1987, John Hiatt, clean and sober and looking for an American record deal, was asked by an A&R man at a British label to name his dream band. After a little thought, Hiatt replied that if he had his druthers, he’d cut a record with Ry Cooder on guitar, Nick Lowe on bass, and Jim Keltner on drums. To Hiatt’s surprise, he discovered all three were willing to work on his next album; Hiatt and his dream band went into an L.A. studio and knocked off Bring the Family in a mere four days, and the result was the best album of Hiatt’s career. The musicians certainly make a difference here, generating a lean, smoky groove that’s soulful and satisfying (Ry Cooder’s guitar work is especially impressive, leaving no doubt of his singular gifts without ever overstepping its boundaries), but the real triumph here is Hiatt’s songwriting. Bring the Family was recorded after a period of great personal turmoil for him, and for the most part the archly witty phrasemaker of his earlier albums was replaced by an wiser and more cautious writer who had a great deal to say about where life and love can take you. Hiatt had never written anything as nakedly confessional as “Tip of My Tongue” or “Learning How to Love You” before, and even straight-ahead R&B-style rockers like “Memphis in the Meantime” and “Thing Called Love” possessed a weight and resonance he never managed before. But Bring the Family isn’t an album about tragedy, it’s about responsibility and belatedly growing up, and it’s appropriate that it was a band of seasoned veterans with their own stories to tell about life who helped Hiatt bring it across; it’s a rich and satisfying slice of grown-up rock & roll.

Vintage Trouble – 1 Hopeful Rd. (2015)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2kHz | Time – 42:52 minutes | 881 MB | Genre: Blues Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download – Source: HDTracks |  @ Blue Note Records

Produced by GRAMMY®-winning producer Don Was, who is President of Blue Note Records, the album also includes the deep soul ballad “Another Man’s Words” and “Angel City, California,” a joyous ode to Vintage Trouble’s hometown of Los Angeles.

Over the past few years, Vintage Trouble have wowed audiences across the globe by opening for The Rolling Stones in London’s Hyde Park, touring with legends like The Who and AC/DC, and playing sold-out headline shows worldwide. Now, on their first album for Blue Note Records, the Los Angeles-based foursome – singer Ty Taylor, guitarist Nalle Colt, bassist Rick Barrio Dill, and drummer Richard Danielson channel the vitality and passion of their live show into a fresh and urgent take on guitar-powered rhythm & blues. Produced by Blue Note president and three-time Grammy Award-winner Don Was, 1 Hopeful Rd. finds Vintage Trouble building off the groove-fueled sound that Yahoo! once painted as „James Brown singing lead for Led Zeppelin“ and blending blues, soul, and riff-heavy rock & roll with joyfully gritty abandon. As heard on lead single „Run Like the River,“ 1 Hopeful Rd. matches Vintage Trouble’s emotional intensity with a raw yet sophisticated musicianship that’s prompted the New York Times to name the band modern-day answer to Otis Redding and BBC Radio 6 to anoint them „the heirs of rhythm and blues.“

A contemporary band who draw their influences from vintage blues, soul, and rock & roll, Vintage Trouble make their major-label debut with 2015’s 1 Hopeful Rd. A set of songs that range from the rollicking dance tune “Strike Your Light” and hard-driving rockers like “Another Baby” to late-night ballads such as “From My Arms,” 1 Hopeful Rd. is a strong showcase for the California-based band whose independent debut, The Bomb Shelter Sessions, earned them an enthusiastic following in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Featuring vocalist Ty Taylor, guitarist Nalle Colt, bassist Rick Barrio Dill, and drummer Richard Danielson, 1 Hopeful Rd. was produced by Don Was, whose previous clients include the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, and Joe Cocker. –AllMusic Review by Mark Deming
